Today’s Party Song:

Keg in the Closet by Kenny Chesney

Kenny Chesney has done what just about every male on the planet has always dreamed of doing. He has made a living out of parties. And he has made a habit of singing some of the best party songs known to man.

One such song is Chesney’s own “Keg in the Closet”, an anthem he penned about his college years and young life (sure sounds like Chesney, doesn’t it). In the song, he speaks about the memories he made in the Lamba Chi Alpha fraternity at East Tennessee State University. Chesney said to his fans, “this is a very true song about our existence there.”

The song opens with an intensifying piano riff, an upbeat introduction to the drums and guitars that follow. Then, Chesney chimes in, opening with one of the most well known first lines in country music: “We had a dog named Bocephus living in the front yard.”

The song centers around “a white framed house in a college town”, and as one can guess form the title, the parties he and his fraternity brothers experienced in college.

“We had a keg in the closet and pizza on the floor, left over from the night before,” sings Chesney. An accurate description, it seems, of many a college frat house, possibly on this very Friday night.

The spirit of the song, what makes the fans go nuts for it, is the incredibly and undeniable truth behind it. Like Paisley’s hit we discussed yesterday, “Keg in the Closet” sings of a life Chesney’s fans have truly lived. It livens a memory that everyone has, and whether they admit it or not, everyone cherishes.

“We had no problems we needed to drown, but we tried our best anyway,” admits Chesney of his wild college years. “We went to class just to pass the time” he says, a line that conveniently rhymes with Chesney’s graduation year, ’89.

“I wrote some of my first songs in that house,” Chesney later said. In “Keg in the Closet”, he remembers old college friends, flag football, and “spring breaks down in Panama”. He also recollects an old lover, Mary Ann, who some predict may be the same Mary portrayed in the song “Anything But Mine” (ironically, these two songs are placed back-to-back on Chesney’s When the Sun Goes Down album, “Anything But Mine” is track 6, “Keg in the Closet” is track 7).

This song is always a fan favorite at Chesney’s live shows, usually preceded by another self-penned single, “Beer in Mexico”. During a live concert, Chesney usually cuts the introductory piano, letting the crowd clap the beat into that revealing opening line, as heard on Chesney’s live album, Live Those Songs Again.

At the end of the song, Chesney admits that he and his college buds “went their separate ways.” “But,” he closes, “I swear it seems like yesterday.”

From the most famous dog in country, to the memories of college life, Kenny Chesney’s “Keg in the Closet” is truly a great country party song.
