Today’s Single:
I’m Still A Guy by Brad Paisley
“Every man can appreciate this song,” a disc jockey says as the first few notes are played, sounding like a small child’s marry go round. But in reality, part of its appeal is to women, who more than ever what Brad is talking about.
Brad Paisley’s newest hilarious single, “I’m Still A Guy”, begins with the difference between a man and a woman: “When you see a dear, you think Bambie, and I think antlers up on the wall.” Paisley plays with these simple, “funny-but-true”, differences throughout the song: “When you see a priceless French painting, I see a drunk naked girl.”
The appeal of the song actually reaches to both men and women, as it themes on the constant struggle in modern relationships. For example, women tend to think “a back rub means only a backrub,” and Brad shares every man’s frustration when his woman “swats his hand when [he] tries” to make it more than that.
The punch line of the song, through all these mysterious but ironically common difference: “Remember, I’m still a guy”. This is Brad’s excuse for wanted to ride a wild bull, go fishing, or knocking down the jerk who was looking at his woman.
The song ends with a harsh criticism of today’s Vogue- and GQ- driven society, particularly members of the male sex who seem to focus an unfathomable amount on time on their image. “These days there’s dudes getting facials, manicured, waxed, and Botoxed. With deep spray-on tans and creamy, lotiony hands, you can’t grip a tackle box.” Paisley describes these man as “lining up to get neutered”, and says “its hip now to be feminized.” This knock is presumably aimed at popular men such as Clay Aiken, Ryan Seacrest or even country music’s own Rascal Flatts.
“I don’t highlight my hair, I’ve still got a pair, yeah, honey, I’m still a guy.” Paisley ends his song with two racy, but laughter-evoking lines. “My eyebrows ain’t plucked, there’s a gun in my truck, oh thank God, I’m still a guy.”
Overall, the song is ultimately hilarious for any mature male or female in today’s society. Undoubtedly, any person who has been in a relationship has lived through at least some parts of this song. And listeners can hear, from beginning to end, and constantly say to themselves, “Ha, that’s true!”
