Today’s Tear-jerker:

You’re Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins

Trace Adkins’ most recent single breaks his long string of intriguingly risqué songs, bringing a new light to his praised career. His past hits have included the sensual “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk”, and the equally provocative “Hot Mama”. Adkins has also made a name for himself with bad-ass songs like “Ladies Love Country Boys”, and increased that view of himself with his recent appearance on NBC’s The Apprentice.

But in his newest release, Adkins shows a new side of him, a side deeply engraved in a sense of integrity, a sense of reality. Adkins really places his feet firmly on the ground, and sings of an emotion that he himself has undoubtedly felt.

In “You’re Gonna Miss This”, Adkins tells the story of a young girl, and her progression through life. In the first verse, she is just a school girl, who rides to high school with her mother “saying I can’t wait to turn eighteen”. But her mother realizes that the high school years are a great time in a person’s life, and that her daughter needs to realize that she will never be a teenager again. Her mother tells her, “You’re gonna miss this”.

The refrain plays on, a long-needed piece of advise that every teen should hear. Many teens simply “can’t wait” for adulthood. But once they’ve reached that point, they realize how much they miss the teen years. This song captures that emotion well.

It also moves on, in the second verse, as the girl is “a brand new bride in a one bedroom apartment.” The song explains that the girl can’t wait for a big house and lots of children. Her father, visiting the apartment, has the same advice for his daughter… “You’re gonna miss this.”

Being young newlyweds, the father realizes, is a life that many people do not appreciate while living it, but later whish they could live again. Though she can’t wait for her future, her father wants her to realize and cherish the present.

Finally, in the third verse, the girl is speaking to a plumber, with “dogs barking, phones ringing, one kid crying, and one kid screaming” in the background. She apologizes to the plumber for the distractions, to which he responds: “They don’t bother me. I’ve got two babies of my own, one’s 36, one’s 23. I know it’s hard to believe, but you’re gonna miss this.”

The refrain is a bit of advice that many of us can take and use in our lives. Whether kids running wild, teens having fun, newlyweds barely getting by, young families budding in chaos, middle-aged couples working for a living, ageing men and women supporting their growing children, or elderly grandparents cherishing their lives… the refrain rings loud and clear in our ears:

“You’re gonna miss this. You’re gonna want this back. You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast. These are some good times, so take a good look around. You may not know it now, but you’re gonna miss this.”

Personally, this song has meant a lot to me ever since I first heard it. I hope you get a chance to listen to it, hopefully it will mean a lot to you too.
